Public Policy Students Reflect on Their Internships: Nvard Loryan at the International Centre for Migration Policy Development

August 24, 2015

Nvard Loryan, Armenia
MPA candidate, Class of 2016
Intern, International Centre for Migration Policy Development

Loryan is interning at the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in Vienna. She is working on the Prague Process, a political initiative to promote migration partnerships among the states of the European Union/Shengen area, Western Balkans, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, as well as Russia and Turkey. The Prague Process is part of the Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (GAMM), which is the overarching framework for the external dimension of EU migration policy. Loryan says that her main task is to draft and revise migration profiles on former Soviet Union countries such as Armenia and Turkmenistan.

Thanks to the internship, Loryan says she has deepened her knowledge of the dynamics governing migration and also learned a good deal about the profiles of specific countries. She is also brushing up on her Russian. “I am doing most of my research and also editing and translating documents in Russian, which is my second language and a working language at ICMPD,” says Loryan.

Her summer internship and the free time she has enjoyed when she’s not working have also given her a chance to reflect on her plans for the future. “I now know that this is the area in which I want to work at, learn more, and achieve significant results,” she says.

In addition to taking advantage of the exceptional music and art that Vienna offers, Loryan has also explored the big ICMPD library.
