Reversing the Resource Curse: Theory and Practice

CEU’s Global Policy Academy (GPA) offers professional development programs in public policy for civil servants and cabinet members, representatives of international organizations and non-profits as well as journalists and advocates. We were founded in 2013 to develop new partnerships with policy actors. Accordingly, our courses are designed not so much as traditional training seminars but rather as hubs for inter- and intra-sectoral dialogue and experience exchange.

Classes are moderated by top professionals and academics in their fields working in innovative ways to provide custom educational experiences. The Academy leverages the broad and deep expertise of SPP resident and visiting faculty to address the needs of policy professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge as they serve the public good. Participants from the public, private, and non-profit sectors enroll in Global Policy Academy courses to gain relevant practice-oriented skills grounded in research-based knowledge in fields as diverse as economic policy and development, conflict and democracy, global drug and public health policy, and migration.

GPA partners include the National Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC)BRAC, the European Stability Initiative (ESI), the Vienna Headquarters of the United Nations and Namati, amongst others. We have developed a deep partnership with the Open Society Foundations, its geographical and thematic programs and units. While GPA organizes the majority of its executive courses and workshops in Budapest, we have also run events in Vienna, Warsaw, Brussels, Athens, Sandö, Chiang Mai and Kuala Lumpur. Our events range from evening panel discussions to two-week courses with participant numbers ranging from 15 to 75.

Our courses and high-level policy dialogues are designed to bridge the gaps that too often exist between the public and private sectors, between theory and practice, and between academia and the policy worlds. Participants also benefit from the opportunity to take advantage of the School’s global reach to grow and enrich their professional networks in an exceptional learning environment. The international and intersectoral composition makes our courses unique for professional networking, robust critical thinking and vibrant peer dialogue. The Academy works closely with other entities at SPP and CEU, and with institutions and organizations locally and regionally. These partnerships enrich Academy courses, and strengthen its role as a global player committed to sharing knowledge and developing expertise for the betterment of communities worldwide.
