On the new constitution: Hungary has not "said goodbye to democracy" [this in reference to a debate in the Norwegian press], but it has seriously weakened liberal democratic institutions. The government’s concentration of political power and economic populism emphasises majority rule in the name of the nation over minority rights and checks and balances.

Nick Sitter comments on Norwegian state television NRK 1 news:
1) The conflict between the Hungarian government and the EU is linked both to economic policy and political concentration of power;
2) polls show that although 1/10 Hungarians  support Jobbik and 2/10 support Fidesz, the remaining 7/10 don't; and while Jobbik might burn the EU flag, the mainstream opposition actually waved EU flags on the January 2nd demonstration;
3) the government faces a choice between a deal with the EU and deepening economic (and political) crisis.

 

 

Bringing together more than 40 stakeholders from around the world, CEU hosted "Youth and Extremism," part of a series of research conferences sponsored by the British Council and the Open Society Foundations.

DPP faculty member Andreas Goldthau authored a chapter titled "Challenges in Oil Governance" for the Routledge Handbook of Oil Politics (ed. Robert Looney). The chapter argues that global oil is best described as a polycentric system, governed by the market.

The journal International Studies Perspectives published an article about global energy security by DPP faculty member Andreas Goldthau. The piece is titled A Public Policy Perspective on Global Energy Security. The article argues that the emerging literature on global energy governance has failed so far to provide an extensive intellectual rationale for the concept.
