Steve Butterfield, a first-year Erasmus Mundus MAPP student here at CEU, wrote an op-ed on President Obama's visit this week to the country of Myanmar. The piece touches not only on the significance of the visit not only for Myanmar's nascent democratic development, but explores the ramifications for U.S.-Chinese relations and "great game" geopolitics in southeast Asia between the two world powers.

Wiktor Osiatynski has witnessed the human rights struggle firsthand, and experienced the changing nature of that power, from the Solidarity movement in his native Poland to his role in writing constitutions for countries in democratic transition, as well as his work with the Open Society Foundations (OSF). In a lecture Nov. 15 at Central European University, Osiatynski outlined the changes in and challenges to human rights in today’s world.

On November 14, 2012, Martin Kahanec (DPP) spoke at the conference "Mobility - how to make it work? : Towards a new European paradigm on migration" organized by the Greens/European Free Alliance at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Drawing on his recent research projects, Kahanec reviewed what we know about "Migrants and their contribution to social protection systems". In particular, in his talk he challenged widespread beliefs that migrants abuse the welfare state, "shop" for welfare, and are net beneficiaries from the social security system.

The Responsibility to Protect, the emerging international norm known as R2P, has marked a turning point in the prevention of major war crimes and other mass atrocities worldwide. Gareth Evans, one of the architects of the R2P principle, chronicled R2P’s development over the last decade in his 24 October CEU lecture titled “Responding to Mass Atrocity Crimes: The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) After Libya and Syria?”
