Ten Years of Public Policy at CEU

The study of public policy at CEU is rooted in the university’s mission to promote open societies as well as a conviction that a combination of different social science methods is required to address the complex challenges of reform and good governance. The decision to offer programs in public policy a decade ago also involved the practical recognition that on the global, national, and local levels of policymaking, there was – and is – an increasing demand for analysts from developing and transition countries.

The university with a laboratory for democracy

In the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communist regimes in Europe, a unique university was created.

It was going to be a laboratory for democracy.

George Soros, the Hungarian-born investor and philanthropist, funded the creation of the Central European University, with the specific aim of promoting the values of an open society and democracy.

During a conversation with OSF Associate Director Leonard Benardo at the School of Public Policy at CEU on December 2, CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros reflected on his long history of involvement with Ukraine, and with Russia.
Shorob.com, a Bengalese youth platform founded by Nuruddin Ahmed (MPA ’16) which we wrote about in October, won the Social Media for Empowerment Award 2014 in the “Communication, Advocacy & Development Activism” category.
“Is Civil Society Good for Open Society” was just one of the topics that CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros and SPP/CEU Professor Wiktor Osiatynski touched on during an engaging 100-minute discussion at the School of Public Policy (SPP) at Central European University (CEU) on November 26.
