Welcome from the Dean of the School of Public Policy
The School of Public Policy at the Central European University has become a leading graduate public policy school in the region. Faculty and students from around the world help make SPP one of the most international environments for learning about public policy and global governance. We aspire to grow and become a great school of public policy for the 21st Century and to be recognized throughout the world as a leader in our field.
Our vision for what it means to be a great public policy school derives from the core values of the University. We embrace the values of open society and self-reflective critical thinking. We stand firm defending academic freedom and integrity.
We value plurality and diversity, and we are committed to strengthening an inclusive community for students, faculty, and staff.
These are critical years for the School. The transition of teaching programs to Vienna will be challenging. Resilience is key to successfully overcoming the many challenges that staff, students and faculty will face in this enterprise.
To remain a successful policy school, we need to be reflective about ourselves and who we serve, and whether or not we are really addressing the big problems of our times. Through SPP’s networks and activities, in Europe and beyond, we strive to make ourselves relevant to the critical issues surrounding us.
SPP is home to internationally renowned scholars who take an active role in public policy through their research, education and policy engagement. Many are active on government committees or in key advisory roles across government, business and civil society, or through our policy centrers.
We are also proud of our achievements in the international university rankings. According to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject rankings CEU ranks among the top 100 in the world in several subjects; and in Politics and International Studies, to which the School of Public Policy contributes, CEU ranks 41st in the world.
We are delighted to receive an amazing and diverse body of students, who also contribute to learning at the School by exchanging experiences and ideas. They have invested their faith and energy in the purpose of CEU and SPP. We hope they go on to change the world for the better as our alumni.
Our priority is to further expand and enrich students’ experiences. We do this through our three Master’s programs. SPP also coordinates the Public Policy track of CEU’s Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations. Continued innovation in teaching and engagement is underway with new programs already in planning for the next few years.
SPP degree programs combine conceptual and theory-based courses with practical courses and applied policy projects. We seek to provide a unique experience, enabling students to acquire core competences as well as skills for impact. We do this to inspire and empower students to understand the underlying causes of the challenges encountered around the globe and to provide some of the tools to confront these challenges.
Welcome to an exceptional school. SPP embodies the relationship between knowledge and experience, theory and practice. We aspire to prepare a generation of graduates versed in the latest concepts, analytical tools and administrative skills that will help improve communities throughout the world.
