Welcome from the Acting Head

At the School of Public Policy we embody the quintessence of CEU’s mission, committed to advanced research and teaching, and socially and morally responsible intellectual inquiry, with an emphasis on the promotion of real-world applications of established and new interdisciplinary knowledge.

Our priority is to further expand and enrich students’ experiences in our three Master’s programs as well as a Public Policy track of CEU’s Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations through continued innovation in teaching and engagement with concrete policy challenges.

The entrenched social maladies, including but not limited to poverty; social and labor market exclusion of minorities; discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or race; human trafficking and child labor; or the rise of extremism, fundamentalism, terrorism and violence around the globe, are just some of policy challenges that urgently require effective solutions and are just some of the topics we seek to engage our students in.

A lesson from the debates surrounding recent events such as the European migration crisis, UK’s decision to leave the EU, or US’s possible withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreements is that there is a worrisome gap between evidence based on hard data and analysis and the attitudes, beliefs and narratives, promoted by key actors and resonating in (often disjunctive) echo-chambers among significant audiences and stakeholders..

We combine conceptual and practical courses and policy labs to provide our students with a unique experience, enabling them to acquire core competences as well as skills for impact. Integrating practical policy experience with firm theoretical and conceptual foundations in our programs is a way to inspire and empower students to master and create authoritative knowledge and foster evidence- and rights-based policy making to address the challenges societies around the globe face. Bringing narratives and perceptions back in touch with evidence is a particular challenge we focus on.

The School draws on the profound expertise of its diverse, internationally renowned faculty of outstanding teachers and researchers and a track record of impactful academic and policy achievements. We are proud that according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject ranking several CEU programs rank in top 100 in the world and in Politics and International Studies, to which the School of Public Policy contributes through the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations, CEU ranks 42nd in the world.

We are proud of our amazing, diverse body of students, who unwaveringly contribute to learning at the School by exchanging experiences and ideas, and investing endless energy, before they go on to change the world as our alumni.

We value plurality and diversity, and we are committed to further strengthening an inclusive community for students, faculty, and staff.

We embrace the values of open society and self-reflective critical thinking. We never stop asking questions. We stand firm defending academic freedom and integrity.

This all is not self-serving. This is purpose beyond power.

This is CEU’s School of Public Policy – a truly unique place.
