SPP Dean Opens Workshop on Global Norm Evolution and the Responsibility to Protect

October 21, 2014

The fourth workshop of the Global Norm Evolution and the Responsibility to Protect project took place in Budapest last week (October 16-18).  It was organized by CEU and the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin. The event is part of a multi-year project that was launched in November 2012 and includes participants from CEU, GPPi, Oxford University, the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), Peking University, Fundação Getulio Vargas in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (FGV), and Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi (JNU). The project is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Xymena Kurowska and Erna Burai, both from CEU’s Department of International Relations and European Studies (IRES), coordinated the workshop. Researchers discussed the case studies on critical junctures in the debate on the Responsibility to Protect over the past decade.

In his opening remarks, SPP Dean Wolfgang H. Reinicke said, “We are very proud to host such an accomplished and diverse group of researchers at CEU. What makes this project special is the fact that on all case studies researchers from Europe and Brazil, China, and India worked together very closely. This will advance research and will also allow the project to make important contributions to the broader political debate on this critical issue.” The first set of case studies was published earlier this month in a special issue of Conflict, Security and Development.
