Policy Cafe II: Sex Trafficking
In our second Policy Cafe event, we will focus on various aspects of sex trafficking. We will have three speakers from SPP/DPP and also a guest speaker:
1) David Hughes will focus on answering, “How does sex trafficking happen?”
David is a first year MPA candidate at the School of Public Policy at CEU. Prior to his studies, he served in the United States Peace Corps in Ukraine from 2011-2013 as a Secondary Education TEFL instructor. During his time with the USPC he implemented multiple projects through various donor organizations which included but were not limited to: HIV/AIDS education, anti-human trafficking seminars, democracy building, gender and development, community development, and project design and management. Before joining the Peace Corps, David gained policy experience interning for the American Security Council in Washington D.C. focusing on American foreign policy. At CEU, David is concentrating his work on security studies and is currently preparing a conflict risk and state capacity assessment to prevent atrocity crimes in the Caucasus region with the United Nations Office of Genocide Prevention through SPP’s Passion Project requirement. David is also the founder and chair of the SPP Wine Club and enjoys cooking.
2) Shreya Bhattacharya will be answering, “How does it affect people?”
Shreya Bhattacharya is a first year MPA student at the School of Public Policy at CEU. She has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Her work has primarily been in the NGO sector in India. Her voluntary work started while still at school with teaching children from underprivileged backgrounds. She continued this until the end of her bachelor’s studies. Following that, she completed a summer training with Teach for India, a sister organization of Teach for America. She believes that being brought up in a nation as diverse as India has sensitized her to political, cultural, normative, and religious differences and biases, and has also taught her how to navigate such settings. She hopes to bring some of these same insights to policy making. While at SPP, she wants to focus on security studies. She is actively involved with the Debate Society at CEU and is a co-convener of the upcoming Budapest Open Debate Tournament 2015. Her Passion Project is on Understanding Political Preferences in Hungary. She is also the SPP blog editor and loves to cook and dance in her spare time.
3) Camille Hesterberg will discuss, “What can be done?”
Camille, an MA candidate in Public Policy, has a bachelor’s degree in Global Studies (with a focus in Central-East European Transitions) and minors in Economics and Spanish from Appalachian State University, North Carolina, USA. After her studies, Camille worked for a mental health non-profit in Asheville, North Carolina, USA, first as a direct care counselor and later as an administrator. Within CEU, Camille is specializing in International Public Policy and is researching social housing policy at the EU-level for Habitat for Humanity. After her CEU studies, Camille hopes to work in human rights and justice advocacy before attending further studies to become a professor.
