Governments and Civil Society Must Work Together to Combat the Rise of Violent Extremism

Violent extremism is a complex and multi-causal issue, causing human suffering and devastation around the world. Club de Madrid and the European Commission on Violent Extremism recently organized a meeting in Brussels to build bridges between governments and civil society – including media – to develop alternative and effective narratives to prevent and counter the challenges of radicalization and violent extremisms.

Archimedes Muzenda (MPA ’17) Launches Online Magazine Urbanizim

Archimedes Muzenda (MPA '17) and two colleagues from his previous studies in urban planning in Zimbabwe are launching Urbanizim, an online magazine and blog on urban planning issues in southern Africa. "As urban planning professionals, we had no platform to discuss issues and share knowledge across cities in our region," explained Muzenda, a native of Zimbabwe. "We wanted to try to solve this problem by giving this group the space to have a voice."

Armenak Tokmajyan Receives International Crisis Group’s Giustra Fellowship for Conflict Prevention

Former Shattuck Center Fellow Armenak Tokmajyan has recently been awarded the Giustra Fellowship for Conflict Prevention at the International Crisis Group. Based in Istanbul, he will research issues related to Syria and expects to conduct fieldwork in places like eastern Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and European cities where there are large numbers of Syrian refugees.

Hermansons Working on Monitoring and Evaluation of Baltic Sea Region

Zintis Hermansons (MPA '15) has been working at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia since graduating from SPP. As senior expert at the Regional Policy Department, Hermansons is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the territorial impact of various EU-funded programs on regional development in Latvia. He has also been selected to be a delegate from Latvia in the OECD Regional Development Policy Committee that is working on territorial monitoring.

Sejal Parmar Discusses Brexit at European Dialogues, San Sebastián
