Syria CW Deal May Open Small Window for Peace

Peace in Syria seems distant but a CEU event on Oct 3 heard that a chemical weapons accord may open up opportunities.

CEU President and Rector John Shattuck told a roundtable on the Syrian conflict on October 3 that the chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta was a defining moment that might galvanize international action as much as the massacre at Srebrenica in Bosnia had pushed the United States into action in 1995. A possible new opening between the United States and Iran might also improve the environment for diplomacy, he said.

SPP Hosts Roundtable on the Syrian Conflict

SPP Professor of Practice, Robert Templer, moderated a roundtable on the Syrian conflict at CEU on Thursday.

Templer, who is also Director of SPP's Center for Conflict, Negotiation and Recovery, was joined by CEU's President and Rector, John Shattuck, as well as Professor Aziz Al-Azmeh of CEU's Department of History, and Assistant Professor Xymena Kuroswska and Associate Professor Erin Kristin Jenne of CEU's Department of International Relations and European Studies.

Alexander Soros joins SPP Advisory Board

Alexander Soros has accepted an invitation to join the advisory board of CEU's School of Public Policy.

“I am delighted to welcome Alexander Soros among the members of our distinguished advisory board,” said Wolfgang Reinicke, SPP's Dean. “The addition of Alexander Soros to the SPP advisory board will further strengthen the school's partnership with the world of policy and practice that is dedicated to governance and human rights worldwide”.
