“Prisons [in Brazil] are actually incubators of violence – and of lots of other problems too,” declared Fiona Macaulay in a presentation at CEU’s School of Public Policy on February 2. Macaulay, who is a Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at the University of Bradford, has been studying criminal justice reform and human rights since the mid-1980s. She explained that the number of prisoners has risen dramatically in Latin America in the last 30 years.

During a recent presentation, Fabian Steuer (Mundus MAPP ’18) shared his experience of being a European Commission trainee with CEU students. The session, part of the “Careers in the EU / European Affairs” series organized by career services staff serving the entire CEU community, was scheduled in advance of the January 31 traineeship application deadline so that attendees could incorporate Steuer’s advice as they prepared application materials.

George Soros Visiting Practitioner Chair Sidney Jones gave a sweeping and nuanced presentation about the nature of violent extremism in Southeast Asia at CEU’s School of Public Policy on January 31. She focused her remarks on Indonesia, where she has lived and worked for 18 years, and on Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

“You have to be willing to take risks. You may fail. Be honest about your failures. It is how you recover from those failures that’s important.” That was some of the advice that SPP Acting Dean and Professor of Comparative Politics Julia Buxton gave to CEU students during the inaugural SPP Faculty Practitioner Career Talk on January 19. She also urged students to look for – and seize – opportunities as they come up. “Life is short. Try to take advantage of the time in your life when you have fewer responsibilities – family, a mortgage.

“We are a country that knows how to party but I have never experienced a party like the one we had on May 23, 2015,” said Eamon Gilmore during a public lecture at the CEU School of Public Policy (SPP) on January 19. Gilmore, who is the EU Special Envoy to the Colombian Peace Process, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ireland, and a George Soros Visiting Practitioner Chair at SPP this term, made his remarks before a distinguished audience that included Irish Ambassador Pat Kelly.
