Rent extraction, revolutionary threat, and coups in non-democracies

In a recent article published in the Journal of Comparative Economics, Michael Dorsch provides a novel political economic explanation for political turnover in non-democracies, where one tyrant is typically replaced by another tyrant.  He considers coup d'État as a means for the political elite to pre-empt revolution against a dictator who's ruining the economy.
