Leadership Change at SPP
Julia Buxton, Professor of Comparative Politics at the School of Public Policy, will step down from the role of Acting Dean of SPP at the end of July. During a May 24 faculty meeting, CEU Rector and President Michael Ignatieff thanked Professor Buxton for her service and announced that Professor Martin Kahanec (ECON ’00) will take the helm of the School for one year as of August 1, 2017.
At SPP, Professor Kahanec teaches courses on economics and on labor and population policy. His main research interests are labor and population economics, ethnicity, migration, and reforms in European labor markets. He has held several advisory positions and leading roles in scientific and policy projects with the World Bank, the European Commission, European Parliament, governments, and international and national institutions. He has published in peer-reviewed academic journals, contributed chapters to collected volumes including the Oxford Handbook of Economic Inequality and the International Handbook on the Economics of Migration, and he has edited several scientific book volumes and journal special issues. His research has been extensively covered by the media, including the Guardian, BBC, the Economist, Wirtschafts Woche, Forbes, Het Financieele Dagblad, and La Vanguardia. He has been an editor of several academic journals, is a member of Academia Europaea, and serves as the president of the Slovak Economic Association. Martin Kahanec earned his Ph.D. in Economics in 2006 from the Center for Economic Research (CentER), Tilburg University, the Netherlands.
