Joining the SPP resident faculty this year, Assistant Professor Anand Murugesan is curious about how institutions, both formal and informal, influence economic behavior. “In the field of economics, we’ve been good at understanding how markets allocate resources and how incentives affect individual decision-making,” Murugesan explains. “But we are only beginning to explore how prior models with low explanatory power start to perform better when we account for institutions like law, power structures, and culture.”

“There is a consensus among empirical social scientists that there is no statistically significant relationship between income inequality and the likelihood of democratization. We wanted to reconsider that link,” explained SPP Associate Professor Michael Dorsch.
Robert Papp and Yuxin Wang (both MPA ’15) presented their research projects at the 15th Annual Research Postgraduate Conference of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. “It was a great way to meet other researchers in social science and hear about diverse topics across disciplines,” commented Wang.
“It was a great success. We had ten computers, and 13 people,” summed up Daniel Szugyi (MPA ’16). The 13 people who crowded into the Student Computer Lab on the second floor of Oktober 6 utca 7 on June 1 participated in a unique event: crowdsourcing to collect data that will be used to build a database with information about accidents and violations in the garment industry of Bangladesh. The event, which was organized by HRSI and three SPP students, attracted participants from throughout CEU.
